Go bags, also known as bug-out bags are bags or bins filled with essentials like food, water, and medical supplies that are ready to grab and go in case of emergency. When natural disaster strikes the last thing you want to worry about is how you’re going to get supplies like food & water. Having the essentials ready could help relieve some panic and anxiety and let you focus instead on keeping calm, keeping safe, and getting through. But many people might be curious as to what to do if you have a pet?

Just like the humans in your household, pets need some supplies too if disaster strikes so you should be packing a go bag for them as well. Here’s what a go bag for your dog or cat should contain:

Food & Water

You’ll need to pack a three-day supply of pet food (canned or dry) and water. More if you have the space. PetHelpful also suggests adding treats in your pet’s go bag. You should also pack bowls for both the food and water that don’t easily tip over.

Cage or Carrier

Each of your pets should have their own cage or carrier labeled with your contact information as well as that of an emergency contact.

Collars & Leashes

Your pet should be wearing a collar with tags and a leash at the time of evacuation and pack extra in the go bag just in case.

Medical Supplies

Similar to a traditional first aid kit, you’ll need a pet first aid kit. If your pet has any medications, make sure to pack those as well.

Medical Information & Records

PetHelpful warns that many shelters won’t let your pet in without proof that she is up to date on vaccinations.  It’s almost important to include other information like medical records and any dietary restrictions.

Poop Bags or Cat Litter & Trays

This is an important one. Make sure to have a lot of poop bags ready for your dog, and if you have a cat you'll need to pack a spare tray or travel litter box and enough cat litter to last a few days.

Familiar Items

Evacuation could be a traumatic experience for your pet. It could help to have some items they love like their favorite bed, blankets, and toys.

Once you’ve got your pet’s go bag ready, make sure they’re accounted for in your emergency plans. Know where all their stuff is, who is in charge of packing them up and getting them out the door.
